The curly girl method, simplified: what to keep and what to skip

The curly girl method began as a book and became a rulebook — no sulfates, no silicones, no shampoo, no heat, no brushes. Some of those rules are sound chemistry; others are group identity. The method works best when its principles are kept and its liturgy is optional.

What to keep

Three habits carry most of the value. First, sulfate caution: harsh detergents strip curly hair faster than straight hair recovers, because sebum travels down a curl slowly and the lengths run dry. A gentler surfactant keeps the scalp clean without leaving the ends parched. Second, real conditioning: a curly strand’s raised cuticle loses water readily, so regular deep conditioning — the wash-day mask, not just a rinse-out — is the difference between defined curls and frizz. The desk’s mask versus conditioner breakdown sorts which is which.

Third, hands-off drying: touching, brushing, or rough-toweling hair while it dries breaks the forming curl and creates frizz that product then has to fight. Plop it, diffuse on low, or leave it alone until dry. The corollary is patience: diffusing at low speed and moderate distance holds the cast better than blasting it flat, and the cast you protect while damp is the definition you still have on day two.

What to skip

Two rules deserve retirement. No silicones ever: silicones are the best smoothing films in cosmetics, and several rinse out with mild surfactants; the blanket ban exists because a few heavy ones accumulate — a scheduling problem, not an ingredient problem. No shampoo at all: co-washing suits some scalps and fails on others; buildup does not care about curl pattern, and an oily scalp under curls still needs real detergence, as the wash frequency guide explains. The no-heat rule is likewise over-read: a diffuser on low is not flat-iron damage, and refusing it to spare hair that never dries any other way trades one kind of harm for another — days of damp hair are not free.

The porosity variable

The one-size version of the method ignores porosity, and porosity decides how much product a curl can hold. High-porosity curls absorb cream and oil readily and genuinely need the sealing layer the old rules forbid. Low-porosity curls repel heavy product; layered cream sits on the surface and flakes by day two, and warmth — a heated deep condition, the steam of a shower — does more for that curl than any amount of layering. One quick read applies to both: if weeks on the method left hair stiffer rather than softer, the routine is carrying more protein film than the curl can hide, and swapping one mask for a moisture-only formula is the honest fix. The desk’s porosity guide covers reading which one you have before buying the method’s full product ladder.

What the simplified version loses in ceremony it keeps in chemistry: gentle surfactants, deliberate conditioning, patience during the dry. Everything else in the rulebook is negotiable, and the hair will tell you which rules were load-bearing.

Frequently asked

How long does the curly girl transition take?
Plan on three to six weeks of awkwardness. Hair stripped by harsh shampoos and heat takes time to rebalance moisture, and early wash days often look worse before they look better. The version of the method that survives that window is the one worth keeping.
Can wavy hair follow the curly girl method?
Yes, lightly. Waves are usually weighed down by the method's richer techniques; lighter products, less layering, and attention to the root suit them better. Take the principles and roughly halve the product.
Do I have to give up my brush?
Only while hair dries. Detangling soaking-wet hair with conditioner and a wide-tooth comb, or brushing before a wash, is fine. The ban exists because dry brushing or mid-dry brushing breaks curl clumps apart — brush at the right time and the rule disappears.
